I'm working in Pages 09 and I go to Edit>Special Characters and pick a smiley face to insert in my document, a blank space is added but not the smiley icon
Any idea why this is? I'm fairly new to the Mac having migrated from Windows so I may be missing something

Which version of MacOs do you have? Pages version? 😕

Pages has not yet been updated to support the Apple Color Emoji font which is used for those icons. You would have download a black/white font like Symbola to get many of them to appear.

thanks for the font suggestion, very strange that I can bring up the icons palette but they can't be used...

The icons are there, you just can't see them, because this particular app can't yet handle the special font involved.
