Migration from PC to Mac

I have been given a MacBook Air and I would like to transfer my files from my PC to the Mac. However, I want to keep the files on my PC too. Does the migration assistant copy the files to transfer them to the Mac or are they removed from my PC altogether? Is there a better way to transfer the files?
