I am very new to final cut pro x, I need an extremely basic walk through of how to fix my transitions and playback lagging. I have a late 2009 macbook with 4gb RAM.
I added a cross dissolve to my video and it will lagg before it and skip over it onto the next clip every time. I've tried it with other transitions and it does the same thing.

Does your video need to be rendered? What are the specs if your media exactly? You don't have a lot of RAM in your computer and I wonder about your graphics capabilities.
That's what I"ve been reading a lot about but I don't know how to do, "rendering". I don't even really know what it means, I'm hoping maybe that's it. How would I go about doing that? Unfortunately 4 is the max RAM I could put in, according to apple.
You will find rendering in the menus. You can also turn on background rendering in the preferences. You need to give the complete specs of your media.
You most probably can put more than 8G RAM into your machine.
I suspect you will find some third party sources for RAM who have successfully tested more than 4 GB for your laptop. Also, you may want to research some tutorials that can quickly bring you up to speed on terminology and essential techniques.
