I have just bought a new iMac. I have a notification to download an update to pages and numbers but when i try it says that i cant update the software since you have not owned the major version of the software. I purchased the software when i bought my Ma

See the above, any ideas?

The reason of that problem is often an indexing problem. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4236 If you haven't got the OS X partition in the list, see > http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409

If nothing works, maybe Pages and Numbers are hidden in your Apple ID purchases, so unhide them > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4928 Then, try to update the apps
