Does iTunes match allow me to delete the music files on my phone, because I can then listen to them via streaming?

I'm new to all this, so hope this isn't an overtly stupid question

Regarding iTunes Match, it sounds like all of my music, including non-iTunes purchased music, is uploaded to "a cloud" for storage and later play.

My question is, since music files occupy most of my iPhone, does this mean that I can delete the files on my phone, because iTunes Match will now be streaming those?

I am hoping to free up space on my iPhone, but not sure if that is how it really works.

Thanks!
