Codec Pack for QT 7 for mac

Hi there,

Ive been using a mac now for about a year...and am totally converted, however one thing that bugs me is compatability with QT and all the thousands of video types/files out there.

When I used a pc (spit) I used to download a 'Mega codec Pack' and that allowed me to watch about 99% of videos on Windows Media Player. Is there an equivalent for QT? I have spent the relevant cash on QT pro so I would like it to work.

I do have VLC and it plays most of the vids I get, but quite frankly, QT should work and I would rather use becuase it has a much sweeter interface (all praise apple!)

Does anybody know of a codec pack?? If not, does anyone fancy putting one together...im sure it would go down well...you could name it after yourself..instant fame and fortune!!!

Cheers all!

I've not seen anything like a "codec pack" for the Mac. Most mac created video uses standard formats and, as such, these "packs" aren't needed. PC created video for the most part (the "legacy" stuff) uses non-standard AVI wrappers which is the main problem for "standards only" QuickTime. With the advent of the iPod and PSP, there are more PC programs that are creating standards compliant video, but the largest chunk is still incompatible.

Additionally, many of these codecs may be Windows only and don't exist for the MacOS.

It's probably a better idea to use a program specifically made to playback mangled video formats (like VLC) than it is trying to shoehorn non-standard video into QuickTime.

there are Codec packs avaialble on the net for Mac/Quicktime.
I will give you this one bit of warning: i would not
reccommend them if you are doing serious production
work, as it can play havoc with both QT Pro and FCP.

I had to do a reinstall of QT and ditch most of my codec
pack, in favor of keeping a few ones that play
nice with QT: Divx 6, 3ivx, oggVorbis, and of course,
the Mpeg-2 Apple codec ( for 6.4 and later) and the DV codecs
installed by FCP. But several others, such as older
ones for MS-, indeo, divx 5, and weird ones like
on2, zoomify, alias, etc can play havoc and in my case,
caused me to loose export of Audio functions.

If you still would like to give it a try,
just google "torrent: quicktime codecs".
But, IMHO, I'd stick just to QT PRO, Mpeg-2 component,
and Divx 6, 3ivx, and ogg vorbis.
