When I try to install an older program on my iBook running a clean re-installed OS 10.3, it asks for a "classic system". I don't have any of my old classic system discs. Can I download it somewhere?

So now I do a clean install of the OS 9 and then update it with the OS 10.3 disk - right?

You install the Mac OS 9 disk normally; reinstalling Mac OS X afterwards isn't necessary. If you're using a Mac OS 9.1 or earlier CD, move the file System:Library:CoreServices:System to the desktop before performing the installation and back afterwards.

Still not working. I try to start up from the Power Mac G4 Software Install Disc (SSW Version 9.0.4), holding the "c" key down during the operation. It still starts in OSX (10.5.8). I continue to get the "classic environment no longer supported" message. Tried this on both my iBook and the power book G4.
I am doomed. ;-)

Aha! You hadn't mentioned the stinky Leopard (10.5.x) until this very last post.
You had me believing you were on Jaguar, 10.3.x, as per your original post.
Leopard (10.5.x) absolutely dropped all support for the Classic environment.
I am sorry for the confusion. I am running 10.3.3 on my iBook and 10.5.8 on my PowerBook G4.
I am trying to get the Classic to run on either. I have a Mini which I use for everything now (along with the iPad). I just wanted to devote one of the old machines to classic so I could run a few now unsupported applications.
Again, sorry for the confusion.

On the 10.3.3 one, Classic should work if you can copy the "System Folder", (not to be confused with OSX's folder called "System"), from a working HDD install of OS9.
Now all it does is give me the flashing "?" folder. Nothing else, won't start from disc or selected system on HD on the iBook.
How do I get back to OSX from the flashing "?"

OK, I got back to the start-up disk part of the finder and selected the operable disc. It works again in 10.3.
I think I need to find some other kind of Classic disc. 9.0.4 doesn't work. Will look for another disc.
