Some of my notes have disappeared from my iPhone 4s. What can I do to try to recover them?

What can I do to recover notes that disappeared from my iPhone 4S?

I have looked for them on iCloud. The notes folder on my iCloud account is empty.

I have looked for them in all my email accounts. I can't find them there either.

Any other ideas?
