How large is you HD and how much space do you have left?

Try the following:

Disconnect all devices from the computer then do the following:

Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.

Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.

Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.

Once this process has been completed restart your computer and repair permissions directly from Disk Utility.

If Disk Utility is unable to complete the repair, you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior, Techtool PRO (not Deluxe) or Drive Genius.

Yes that is exactly what I am saying. Your drive is 5 years old. For most notebook drives that is around the normal life span, usually shorter but can be longer. But in any event all spinning, Mechanical, drives fail. They have been failing since they were invented. It is just the nature of the beast.

Thanks for your help but i don't believe its the nature of the beast, i think its the nature of planned obsolescence that Apple seems to practicing more and more.

I have been very diligent in taking care of my laptop [repairing permissions, optimizations etc...] and there is no reason why they can't build them to last longer then 5 years especially considering that i paid over $2000 for it.

Doesn't matter how you take care of it. Hard drives fail, period. Some sooner then others. You have gotten a good long life out of the originally installed hard drive.

Not Planned obsolescence, they fail and have been doing that since they were invented.

Sure some drive last forever. I had one installed in an old desktop that was on 24/7/365 and it lasted 10+ years. But eventually one of the other drives in that system failed and I retired it along with all the other parts in it.

You can buy any SATA Notebook size, 9.5mm x 2.5", and replace it yourself. Your model uses the same drive as what is used in every notebook made today. You could even replace it with a SSD (Solid State Drive) as all of those are made to fit into notebooks, size wise. The only thing different in drives and computers made today is they are a different BUS speed. Your model is either SATA 1 or 2 where as most all computers and drives are now SATA 3. But they are Backward compatible so it will work in your Mac.
