10.8.3 has not solved 2 key issues

Never had any of the above issues since installing Mountain Lion.

I didn't upgrade from Lion, but installed ML from scratch.

I'm still at 10.8.2, but I will update soon.

Yes. I rarely or almost never used Hide Others or setting a background picture inside a folder. But I did it now while reading your post and I reported what I got.

I do usually sort elements or change views and never noticed the behaviors you pointed out.

1) Can't reproduce. I've got Quicksilver, and use it extensively. No issue as you describe. What other third-party software do you use that would affect the mouse cursor? There are a few other threads here where the mouse cursor disappears. Perhaps they are related.

2) That is normally because the .DS_Store file for the folder is corrupt. For the folders that do not retain their settings, delete the .DS_Store file and try again. That's been happening since the beginning of .DS_Store.

3) Yes, indeed, it doesn't have a custom icon anymore.

1. Still can't replicate. I've seen TotalFinder implicated in a few problems, here, but I can't remember the details. With PhotoShop I can believe it. Adobe tends to roll its own user interface, so it is likely not updating correctly.

2. Yes, and it will be recreated automatically. It is the file that stores the window settings. It has never been a solid solution. Been many complaints through the years. I have had success with deleting the file on a few "stuck" windows. My issues were only with the main "Macintosh HD" window, nothing within my Home folder.

3. You should file a bug report if you have a developer account. Otherwise, you can provide Feedback on Apple's website. There isn't a section Finder, so just use the Mac OS X page. With a bug report, you get a tracking number, and possibly a response. If you sign up for a free developer account, you have access to the Bug Reporting. I've never done it that way, so I can only regurgitate what has been posted by others.

If you Get Info on a new webloc file, what does it list as the default application. Mine had iOS Simulator (which I've never used). If you have an old webloc file with the correct icon, what does it list as the default application?

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:

• Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
• When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
• If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.

Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

When I follow your steps, the insertion point stops blinking, but the cursor is still visible. I also noticed that the insertion point is still active at the original location. The only way to bring back the insertion point is to click on another Mail window. Clicking in the addressing fields, and then back doesn't bring back the insertion point in the message pane, even though it functions correctly in the address fields.

I tried various other Text-based programs and all worked correctly.

Mail's text editing has always been flaky. I guess this is just another example.

I think the reason we couldn't figure out what you were describing is it wasn't that the Cursor that was invisible, it was the insertion point was invisible.

That cursor is called the I-Beam cursor.

.webloc icons have the same aspect as before the update. Also dragging new Safari web link to the Desktop or any other folder. No changes.

I followed your steps to reproduce, but I can't reproduce the Hide Others problem. Works fine for me.

The .webloc thing I'm guessing occurs for people who have installed the developer tools, maybe the installer changes the association for that file type. I saw the problem too. Maybe a wider survey would determine whether the problem only happens to people who have developer tools installed. I don't think you would have "iOS Simulator.app" on your computer unless you have developer tools installed.
