Google contacts not syncing

Hi,

I have an iPhone 3G running iOS 4.2.1. I have my contacts database in a csv file. I have imported them in my google accounts. I'm trying to sync Google Contacts from this Gmail account. I have followed the instructions here http://support.google.com/mail/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2753077

After tapping "Next" I get the error dialog "Cannot Connect Using SSL. Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?" and if I tap "Continue" another error dialog pops up saying "CardDAV account verification failed."

I've tried manually enabling the "Use SSL" setting under advanced settings. That doesn't work. There's also a port setting, but I don't know the number or if a number is even needed.

Please help.

I don't believe you can sync your contacts...requires iOS 5.0 or higher, which is not available for the iPhone 3G.

Here is an article with a procedure to get gmail contacts into the address book of older iPhones. I just did it today with an iPhone 3g with iOS 4.2.1.

Besides these forums being the lamest that I have seen,,,,,

I am running IOS 6.1.3 and can not get all of my Google contacts to synch with the contacts on my iPhone 4.

Help is almost non-existant it seems compared to other platforms.

The port setting is 443. This did not make a difference for me though - I still received the same error messages that you did. Did you ever get this resolved?

Thanks Terry I did not get notification of your post until today (5/3) and then trying to log in and post here was one of my most frustrating computer experiences of the year. Leave it to a big company like Apple or MS to really really really screw something simple up. Sorry but there is still steam coming out of both ears.

I am wondering if I must keep my current mail connection in order to keep my calendars synched? I have sorta been through this before when I tried to use exchange server for my mail and it stomped all over my calendar....

Terry I left the mail account in place and the cardDav addition seems to have synched some of the stubborn

contacts down to my iPhone! :-)

One last thing I have not been able to solve yet is how to get to the notes field in Google contacts from my iPhone? I have tried everything I can think of (even with a browser) and have this far not been able to access a lot of important data I have there.

*** OPPS! I SKOKE TOO SOON..... contacts added to the iPhone don't seem to be synching to the Google contacts account.... any ideas?

I have plesantly discovered that the NOTES part of my Google contacts are appearing on my iPhone. Not sure if this is due to the addition of WebDav or if I missed it earlier! :-)

All I have left to figure out is how to get added iPhone contacts to show up in my Google contacts online.

I keep getting CardDAV account verification failed. I typed in the gmail account password!
