Apple TV via Samsung 7.1 surround sound?

Dear all,

Just bought the Samsung 7.1 HT-E6750W surround sound system, so I could play all my music via Apple TV (not to mention ordinary TV) with more than the stock standard TV speakers (Sony KDL46EX500).

I have now spent two nights pulling my hair out, trying to get some darn sound out of the new speakers: all 6 speakers work when I watch a Bluray; but only the front right and left generate sound when I play music via Apple TV, regular TV or DVD.

Does this sound as odd to you? Any idea what I'm doing wrong???

Currently I have an HDMI between TV and Surround System, and the optical cable from Apple TV to the Surround Sound System.

Any plain-talking guidance would be appreciated! Have a party in 4 days!!

Sorry I'm late to this and you've obviously had your party.

You can check the settings in Apple TV to determine if you have the output set correctly. I'm sure this is well explained somewhere else, but...

It's possible there is nothing wrong with any of your devices. I suggest you Wikipedia surround sound and familiarize yourself with the formats and terminiology. Here's a crash course.

Blurays are encoded in full surrroung 5.1 or 7.1. 5 channels of directional audio (Front Left, Center, Front Right, Rear Left Rear Right) plus a Subwoofer (the .1).

DVDs can have 5.1 but often they are 2.0 or 2.1 meaning Left and right channel plus an optional sub.

I have no idea how you are connecting your TV.

Finally, to Apple TV and music.

Music is only stereo. Left and right channels. This is how all music is. It is how the source material is recorded and distributed. Only if you buy a music DVD will you ever get full surround. iTunes is stereo. Music on AppleTV is stereo.

Many movies on Apple TV are only stereo, even the HD movies! It is very misleading and one of my biggest frustration with Apple. The store used to say if it was 5.1, but now I believe they only show a Dolby Logo, but even that doesn't promise 5.1. It could be some compressed format such as Dolby Digital Plus.

Long story short, don't expect surround sound from anything on AppleTV and if you want that surround feeling, read the manual for your fancy sound system and change the input settings or surround settings on your AV reciever. Many have options to turn a stereo signal into a surrround automagically.

thanks eveyone this is helpful... can you clarify further...

so if I use the up arrow button and the movie on Apple TV says 5.1 should I then expect surround sound? I know the surround sound is working properly with other input devices such as my DVD player.

regrding the optical cable, would this make a difference? currently my Apple TV is only connected to the TV.... with an HDMI cable. I have no optical cable connected then to the receiver.

If when viewing a movie on Apple TV and you press the up button for more info and says it is 5.1 then the source is surround sound. However make sure you have Dolby Digital turned on under SETTINGS>AUDIO &VIDEO >Dolby Digital.

Regarding your cable setup it depends on how your system is configured and if your TV is capable of "Pass Thru"

You can connect the Apple TV to you TV via HDMI and then connect an output HDMI to your receiver and it may pass the surround sound to your receiver. You may have to change settings on your TV to allow this.

You could also just connect an optical cable straight from the apple TV to the receiver. That will definitely work.

Lastly you could make your receiver the hub and connect Apple TV to your receiver via HDMI and then HDMI to your TV and be done. If you have a new receiver this is the simplest method.
