If SSL is required for IMAP

If SSL is required for IMAP as stated on the configuration page for iMail, why are we told to use TLS if SSL does not work?

There is no iMail, I assume you mean Mac Mail

TLS is an updated SSL protocol. It is newer, and not all servers support it. Some newer servers however will not use SSL if both the server and the client support a newer protocol (TLS) and you must use the newer protocol.
