Apple does not maintain any records of stolen products, and any general web database you may find is not comprehensive or guanteed to be accurate for the data they do contain. If you can't buy from someone you know personally and can trust, then you're always taking the risk that you're buying stolen property.

You might consider a refurbished iPad from Apple; some models are available at substantial discounts. You can also check local dealers to see if they have any deals on returned iPads; a large retailer such as Best Buy would be more likely to have such "open box" stock.

What model iPad and what size storage? How much is the seller asking? If the price seems quite low, there's more of a chance it's stolen.
