I have a new iMac and want to connect to my HP Officejet J5780 printer through my old iMac. However the new iMac is not picking up the software either for this or another networked printer and so the formatting for the printing is wrong. Can anyone help

The connection type you are describing is a shared connection over the network. When a printer is shared, the only Mac that will need the software is the the Mac it is being shared from. If you try to install the printer software on another Mac/computer on the network, the software will not be able to see the printer. You will only be able to use the software on the Mac the printer is being shared from. No other computer will be able to use the software with the printer. I hope this clears things up for you.
