firewire 800 discontinued?

I notice on the new Macbook Pros, there are usb 3.0 ports but no firewire 800 ports. Perhaps this is old news... I am about to buy a backup drive and was leaning towards the WD My Passport Portable for mac. This drive has two firewire 800 ports and one usb 2.0. I will likely upgrade my macbook pro in the next couple years so if firewire 800 will not be around, it looks like I need to find a usb 3.0 drive instead. Can anyone comment on this?

Use an adaptor such as this one.

They are not on the retina models but you can get an adapter. The conventional MBPs still have Firewire ports.

Better yet, buy a drive that has Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 ports:
