If the password request appears after the OS has been partially loaded, it is a Multiple Users password.

In order to get rid of the Multiple Users password, a preference file must be thrown away (deleted). This file is named Multi-User Prefs and is located in the Preferences folder in System Folder on the hard dive.

The only way to get rid of that (when the password is unknown) is to boot the machine to a different volume, such as an optical disk. Ideally this would be an OS Install CD, but can be any CD valid for that model including a repair CD. An external hard drive is also suitable, provided it has an OS valid for the iMac G3.

There is no way around this - access must be gained to the contents of the System Folder on the hard drive, and the only way to do that in this situation is to boot the machine to an OS which does not include the demand for a Multiple Users password.

It is possible that the hard drive has been partitioned and contains more than one volume. Depending on the model of iMac G3, this may be possible by holding down the Option key when starting the machine (hold it down from before the startup chime sound). If this works, Startup Manager will appear amd will allow the choice of alternate boot volume.

If the password request appears before anything at all starts to load from the hard drive, it is a firmware password. This password setting will prevent the machine from being booted to/by anything unless the password is entered. It can be undone; contact Apple's tech support for instructions.
