I just installed aperture 3.4.3  and want to check the preference, opening preference I cannot see the expected menu containing e.g.import, export settings. only the content of the general setting is displayed.

    Jens,

select the "Allgemein" panel and use the command "View > Show Toolbar" (or the key combination ⇧T). That should bring the Toolbar of the Preferences panel back.

    Léonie

Added: I have never seen the Toolbar vanish from the Preferences  panel in an earlier version of Aperture. And there is no sense in having it vanish. That looks buggy to me.

    Well done!

Bugly.  I've never seen it (and wouldn't have figured it out, either).  Fwiw just tested it here (3.4.3, English localization, 10.8.3).

Jens -- welcome to the discussions.  Don't let this start you off on the wrong foot.  .

Well it is a window with a toolbar, and it is selected, and you did run hide toolbar, so......

Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - but it does seem to happen only if the preference window is selected and you run View->Hide Toolbar. The tabs won;t be hidden if you hide the toolbar on the main window.

    @All, thanks for your answers.

It seems that I put not enougth details on my issue - sorry.

    Trying to improve...

All I did is click Aperture, select preferences. This is the result:

    Bildschirmfoto 2013-#172DB7.jpg

    The pop-up looks like this:

    Bildschirmfoto 2013-03-19 um 07.53.08.png

But I expect it to look somehow like this (snapshot taken from training material):

    Thanks a lot.

Jens, genau.

Sure, only it is a bit ambiguous and poorly documented, which toolbar will be hidden . And I am still trying to figure out, for what we would want to use this surprising new "feature". It might come in handy, if we are only really using one preference pane, for example, the "Export" panel. You could freeze the panel to the "Export" view this way and can quickly switch between external file formats or color spaces or different mailers.

    Gern geschehen!

Man entdeckt doch immer wieder neue, unbekannte Möglichkeiten in Aperture.

I don;t think it was intentional, the tabs of  preference window are not really a toolbar in the normal OS X sense of the term.

I reported it as a bug. W'ell see what happens.

Never have I seen such a gentle translation of "bug".  .

I thought it might perhaps be an Easter egg (we are close to Easter) or a forgotten developer feature - just cautious

Every Finder window and Preference windows for other apps, for example, has this potential.  Earlier versions of OSX even had a white pill icon to do the same thing as Show or Hide Toolbar.  I have not been surprised to see the same in Aperture.

I have often seen people lose the Toolbar in the Preferences for Mail, for example.

In Safari for one when you have the preference window open the Hide Toolbar is grayed out:

Screen Shot 2013-03-19 at 15.23.04 .png

Same in Finder, so this behavior in Aperture really isn't the norm.

Mail is a different case. A message window is a regular window so hiding the toolbar makes sense. Though I just checked and if Mail's preference window is open the hide/show toolbar affects it.  (but that is what you wrote).

I still feel this is a bug.

In iPhoto '11 it isn't possible either - I tried.

The Preferences panels don't have toolbars (with tools to select) - they have tabs to reveal different panels. And I think tabs to reveal panels are  conceptually something very different from a toolbar. So it is a bit confusing, if a menu command from the main application window "Hide Toolbar" will hide the tabs of a sub panel, even if this panel has the mouse focus.
