How are iBook updates passed on to customers?

I understand how to update a published iBook. What I don't understand is how a customer of the original version of the book get the updated version...is it pushed to them? Can they download it for free, as they might update an app? Or are they forced to buy it again?

If it's not pushed to them, how will they know that there is an update available?

I'm in the process of writing a section promising that I'll be updating the book as fresh information comes in...wondering now though if that's possible.

With thanks!

Users are notified of an update via a badge on that book in the iBook bookshelf, on their computer via iTunes, via App Store on their device...similar to apps - updates are always free - they need to interact with the process to complete it.
