can I use AirPlay Mirroring to watch a movie through the DVD Player on my MacBook Pro?

I have DVD's that play perfectly on my MacBook Pro. My airplay mirroring with my Apple TV is working fine as well. When I try to play a movie in the mirror on my tv all i get is a screen full of grey and white checker board squares with sound. Why are they not working together?

About AirPlay and Airplay Mirroring

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). For non-qualifying Macs you can try using Air Parrot.
