Cannot play uploaded music purchases on my IPad.

I just uploaded 30 songs that I purchased on my IPad to my IMac. Initially they were grayed out and had a cloud next to them (I am not using ICloud). When I selected "transfer purchases from my IPad" the song titles turned black but they won't play. They have an arrow next to them that will let you add them to a play list or open the Itunes store, but still won't play. Anyone else have this problem?
