How can update firmware on a GTX670 or HD5450 GPU?

Hi

How or where can I get the firmware of a EVGA GeForce GTX670 or a XFX Radeon HD5450 updated so I get to see the white EFI screen when booting my Mac Pro?

I installed the GTX670 a few months ago and the Mac Pro boots and works fine with it. What I would like to do is fit a SSD drive and install OS X. Without the EFI screen I can't start to install OS X off the DVD.

I look forward to some ones help

Ship it to MacVidCards they are very good at this for nVidia.

For Radeon you have other options.

There are sites that deal with flashing.

There are those who pay extra to have GTX 570 flashed PC card to boost CS6 wtih CUDA.

Thanks Hatter

The information you have provided will prove useful in the future.

I have managed to install OS X onto the SSD. I purchased Mountain Lion from the AppStore. I thought it would only allow me to install onto the existing OS drive, but it allowed me to install onto the SSD. I've been working with Windows for to long and think things will be more difficult ;-) OS X is working a treat on the SSD.

I have pulled the GTX670 and used the HD5450. This is working OK. I will consider a more powerful GPU for the Mac in the future. The GTX670 will go in a PC so I can run http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com.

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

All the best

glad it might help..

anyone today would probably find Windows 8 sans Metro to be fine.

and most people today do use SSD for system, and use other drives for data, scratch etc

the limitation of not having more pcie aux power cables and connectors limits things too much. an 8-pin would have made life easier to have two GPUs

Between cloning - I use Paragon on Windows, acts somewhat like Carbon Copy Cloner insofar as making a bootable backup I can plug and go - and backups - TimeMachine or FileHistory

Some have managed to 8se the default ATI 5770 for GT120 for boot screen and still use the GTX 570 and above.

A PC at least you can SLI - and there are some people around here, ex-USAF, that really get into X-Plane and more.

Ability to use a gpu with more than 2GB is very recent and has been glass ceiling for years. Now people are seeking out 2.5 to 4GB cards to use. And what I expect has to happen soon is a motherboard with PCIe 3.x of course, better bandwith and power management... and SATA3 for your SSD does make a difference.

If you look at Sonnet 6G PCIe 2xSSD setup is bootable and put your system on steroids - don't know if it makes flying smoother but might. A couple Samsung 840 240s.

Never really wanted to crack open the Mac Pro, but the original Radeon wasn't upto the job of running X-Plane or Digital Combat Simulator (DCS) in Boot Camp. The Pro is supposed to be my software development system. If I could be rid of Windows, I would. DCS is Windows only so I will have to knock together a PC.

A bit off topic... I also 'fly' X-Plane. A friend and I have built a flight simulator that works with X-Plane. A couple of concept drawings attached. Instead of hydralics we used pneumatic rams and quiet compressors. The simulator works very well and is great fun to fly. I am now writing the software to get the simulator to work with DCS.

Back on topic... Hopefully Apple will release a Mac Pro with SATA3, Thunderbolt, USB3, the ability to have multiple GPUs and use tech like SLI and PCIe 3. The Pro deserves a good overhaul.

In the meantime the Sonnet kit looks cool. I am liking the idea of a MacBook Air + Sonnet Echo + GTX670. If that would work(?)
