I have a Mac Book Pro, over 5 years old, that upon startup, I get a very jumbled screen, with a dialog box in the middle that says "To restart the computer...", and that verbage is in various languages.
Any ideas?

What you are experiencing is what's called a kernel panic which is hardware related.
