PowerPC applications are no longer supported?

All of a sudden, I can't open my EPSON Artisan 800 Scanner Utility because PowerPC applications are no longer supported? All worked fine for 2 years then suddenly, I'm no longer able to open scanner utility. I've tried to uninstall all and re install with orginal CD, then again with apple supported drivers. I can print but cannot scan from desk top! ***? I'm outta ideas. Anyone know what's going on?

Updated drivers for your multi device are here.

Well maybe; but more likely NOT!

I did the same for my Epson Artisan 810 printer and the same type dialog came up to use System Software update. I did and nothing Epson was suggested.

In the oft-chance that I had downloaded an Epson Scan update through Software Update earlier, I looked in my Applications folder and Utilities folders: both contained Epson Scan apps that were from 2009 (probably from when I migrated from my dying iMac in August 2011) and clearly do not work.

My recollection is that Epson did not update its SCANNER drivers for these models, only the printer drivers.

So to summarize, of course use Software Update to get the updated printer driver for your Epson Artisan, but use Apple's Image Capture to control the scanning functions of this multi-function device.

That's the image I was just about to post. Right above the area highlighted in yellow it notes the 5.4.9 scanner driver as being compatible with 10.6.x through 10.8.x.

No doubt the page is confusing. The first thing a user sees is your original image, which just tells you to connect your device, turn it on and have Software Update search for drivers. Which is true for the printer drivers, but for whatever reason, Epson wrote updated drivers for the scanner part of the same device.

Yes, I agree with your comments.

However, I was hoping to get Allan to respond to my message right after his. I was hoping that he would confirm that he is also using Image Capture and not some Lion/Mt. Lion compatible version of Epson Scan.

His message was vague on the point, because his comment that "the ones on the CD that came with my Epson printer" that didn't work are earlier versions of Epson Scan.

If Allen did find a Lion/Mt. Lion compatible version of Epson Scan, it is important to know the URL, so that we can also find and download it.

Thank you for that clarification, Allen.

As I am sure both of you know from your readings on these threads, there are many scanners users who prefer the original manufacturer's scanning software over Apple's Image Capture. If there was a choice for the Epson Artisan 800/810, I would like to make a comparision for myself, and other similarly situated users.

It appears that there is no known choice and I will continue to use and recommend Image Capture.

Quite honestly, I cannot even remember the differences between using Epson Scan in Snow Leopard and now Apple's Image Capture in Lion, if there are any!

PS: For $1.99, I purchased the App - PDF Squeezer and it consistently compresses down the size of Image Capture's created PDF files by about 50-90% (depending on original scanning settings).

I know there are other free workarounds, but this App handles the process very elegantly and quickly.
