Time Machine bewilderment

I am having some wierd issues with Time Machine. I am on an iMac running 10.8.3 trying to back up with Time Machine to a 2TB LaCie Porsche design external USB HD. Time Machine will sucessfully back up twice then gives me an error that it cannot create the back up folder. The drive is formatted Mac Extended Journaled and has plenty of space on it. I have tried numerous things but each time the same thing happens - two backups then it fails on the third. I have...

- Used disk utility to repair the disk.

- Recently zeroed out the the drive thinking that would clear up anything that should not be there. The zeroing took well over 18 hours to finish too.

- Tried using a different Mac running snow leopard to format it at one point.

- Re-formatted it to something else (FAT32) so that when I connected it, Time Machine would prompt me to format it in the manner it requires. Something that seems worth noting it that when I get Info on the drive, it does not have the "Ignore Ownership" checkbox. When Time Machine formatted it, that check box did show up but then when I checked after the fail, it was no longer there.

Just now, I changed the Sharing & Permissions on the drive though the Get Info to read & write for Me, staff, and everyone then applied it to the enclosed items. It has been applying those privledges for several minutes and is still as of this moment. This has me bewlidered. Why would it work twice then seemingly change permissions on the drive?

After one attempt I did notice, when viewing in Disk Utility, that the drive was indeed formatted as Journaled but the partition below it was formatted as something else. Any help is suggested.

You might want to clone your hard drive just so you have a backup.

Try removing the disk in Time Machine Preferences and adding it back.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard." Note the timestamp of the last such message. Clear the text field and scroll back in the log to that time. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them (command-C) to the Clipboard. Paste (command-V) into a reply to this message.

If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — anonymize before posting.

Sounds like a problem with the drive, the power to it, or the USB cable.

When you run Repair Disk on the drive, does Disk Utility find and fix things? If you're not sure, start Disk Utility, select Window > Show Logfrom the menubar to see it; then scroll if necessary to find the right section, copy and post the messages here.

Also, how old is the drive? They don't last forever. 😉

Try ejecting, disconnecting, and powering the Time Machine disk off for several minutes. Restart your Mac, then reconnect and power up the disk.

Try different port(s), cables, and combinations of the two (a plug that works fine in one port may not make good contact in another).

I am working on the info Lin Davis suggested I provide but wanted to quickly respond to say that since I changed permissions manually it was able to backup a few times but once again now kicks back the error. Right now it also will not eject because it says it is use and I also cannot empty the trash. I get an unexpected error code -50. The drive is only about 1 year old. Right now tried to run Repair disk but Disk Utility says, when trying to repair the drive:

"Problems were encountered during repair of the partition map

Error: Some information was unavailable during an internal lookup.

When trying to repair the partition on that drive it says it cannot unmount the drive. Everything that is happening now, happens every time I go through this. The fact that it does manage a few backups before crapping out at least reassures me that there is a backup.

It seems to work fine when I plug it into my older MacBook running Snow Leopard. Gosh I miss the stability of Snow Leopard.

It seems it may be related but I do not know exactly why but whenever I run What's Keeping Me to see why I cannot eject it, mds is there twice. One of the mds lines has just the drive path as the open file. The other lists the same path plus "/Spotlight-V100/Store-V2/865F9946-D56F-4355-B6D4-E6F776C7B07D/reverseDirectory Store" as the open file. Whenever I have this eject issue, mds always seems to be there.

I have done just about every combination of powering off, changing cables etc.

Also, I did save some additional files on that drive, in a different folder than the backups. In the past I have never had an issue using a drive for TM and other files but again, that was on Snow Leopard. Ahh..old Snow Leopard. Good times.

The console log info is coming up. Look at it initially something certainly seems off. Stand by and thank you in advance.

It looks like the drive is malfunctioning, but just to make sure, boot in safe mode by holding down the shift key at the startup chime. Try to back up and see whether you get the same results.

Including the console messages, it's clear OSX is having all sorts of trouble talking to the drive. Disk Utility, Time Machine (backupd), Spotlight (mds, mdworker), fseventsd (logs file changes on each disk), etc. The "device is not ready" messages at 11:06 are almost certainly for it, too.

Year-old drives do fail sometimes, and this one is giving your Mac fits. If it's covered by warranty, contact LaCie.

Do you have another drive you can use? If not, I'd strongly suggest getting one ASAP. It's always prudent to keep "secondary" backups, but especially so if there's any question at all about your main ones. See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for more, and some suggestions.

I tried to boot in safe mode. Each time, the little progress meter would get about 1/3 of the way and never go further. One time I left it for about 2 hours but it still never fully booted.

Then there's a problem with your boot drive. You can go through the motions of repairing it in Disk Utility if you haven't already done so, but it probably needs to be replaced (or else you have some other hardware fault, such as a damaged SATA cable.) I suggest you take the machine to an Apple Store for testing.

Whew. I am back and just wanted to give you closure on this one. After failing to boot in safe mode, I tried booting to recovery. I figured it wouldn't hurt to reinstall the OS. That also failed after about 1/3 on the progress meter. With the guidance of AppleCare, I then tried to do the internet recovery thing. That too could not finish. After that, I took it to the Genius Bar who tried to do an archive and install. They were not sucessful. They had to do an erase and install to finally get it working. Thankfully Time Machine had suceeded in creating those two backups just before all this went south. Still have no idea why everything was so screwy but it is working now and Time Machine is backing up regularly so that's good. Thanks for the help here too.
