Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
First of all, reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
If it doesn't work, return the Apple USB SuperDrive and buy another external optical drive. Any optical drive will work with your iMac, and the Apple USB SuperDrive gives a lot of problems to some users

The Superdrive is anything But Super. I suggest you return it for a full refund and buy any other make an model External DVD drive that connect by USB and it will work with your Mac.
It does not have to sold by or have the Apple name on it to work with Any Mac Computer.

Problem solved: As I was working through the SMC instructions and the device continued to kick out the dvd, it occurred to me that perhaps inserting them into the device with the logo up was wrong (surely not) but tried turning it over and VOILA, success. I assumed the black side of the superdrive with the Apple logo should be facing up but apparently Apple wants their logo in a place where nobody can see it. Thanks to all who posted replies. It would be nice if the tiny one-page instruction was a little more clear on how to set the device up.
