The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format.

I am currently having issues with the application Preview on my iMac. I have to look at thousands of pictures of documents, and use preview to view these photos of documents that are in a .jpeg format. Most of the time I open about 10,000 to 15,000 images with preview. I then hop through these images looking at the information. Until recently when I updated my OS to Mountain Lion. With my older operating sytem I could open thousands of photos in preview and have no problems viewing them. Now I can't view all the photos at once without getting an error message. The current error message that I receive is "The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format." I can open these files individually if I wish, but I cannot look at all of them in a group. I have not had this issue with any of the previous versions of Mac OS. Several other people in my office have the same issue, and are depending on me to get this resolved. Please help me be a hero.

Regards,

Eugene

Linc,

I appreciate your response. I do not receive an error, for the first 2,703 images after going through yor steps. However, Preview is unable to open the rest of the images. I attempted to open 8,070 images in Preview on this test. I receive the error message "The file couldn't be opened because it isn't in the correct format The file might be corrupted, truncated, or in an unexpected format," from images 2,704 to 8,070. On the sidebar there are thumbnail images loaded, for the files that work. There is a generic JPEG image, for the images that do not work. I appreciate your time.

Thanks,

Eugene

Back up all data. Quit Preview if it's running.

Hold down the option key and select Go Library from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following items, if they exist:

  • Caches/com.apple.Preview
  • Containers/com.apple.Preview
  • Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
  • Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist
  • Saved Application State/com.apple.Preview.savedState

Launch the application and test.
