How do I burn an iPhoto slideshow to a DVD families can view?

Do you have iPhoto '11 on your Mac? Then you can create a slideshow by selecting photos in the browser (for example from an album in the Source list) and using the command "File > New > Slideshow".

• Pick a theme you like and arrange the order of the slides, add some music from the Media Browser.
• Then export the slideshow as a video by using the "Export" button.

I'd suggest the sie "Large". This can be viewed on a computer or on Apple TV.

You can burn this video to a data DVD for viewing on a computer by selecting it in the Finder and using the "Burn" command from the actions menu in the Finder window's toolbar.

You can put up to 2 hours of playing time on an iDVD video DVD. Create the slideshow in iPhoto with an aspect ratio of 4:3 (iDVD) and export it at Size = Medium or Large. This will create a Quicktime movie file.

Open iDVD, create a project and select a theme. Drag the exported Quicktime movie file into the iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.

Follow this workflowin iDVD to help ensure the best quality final product:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image and launch DVD Player and play it. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality. Always use top quality media: Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

I too am trying to burn a DVD of a slidshow that I created in IPhoto. I am attempting to send it to ITunes to then make and burn in IDVD. I have a new MAC and am using Iphoto 11. I downloaded IDVD from an older CD I had. It is version 7.1.2. My slideshow has both video and photos. I attempt to export it to ITunes. It shows it exporting, takes a while and gets to a certain point and then just sits there and does nothing. Is there a max on how much I can send? Please help, I am totally frustrated at this point. My husband is ready to rehook the old computer!!!!!

You don't need to export it to iTunes. Just save the exported Quicktime file to the Desktop. That way you can watch the temporary file be created. What size are you saving it as? With the iPhoto 9.5 save it at 480p. With earlier versions of iPhoto save it as Medium or Large.

Be sure you have a minimum of 20 GB of free space on your hard drive for this and iDVD;s processes.

Terrence is right. DVDs are standard definition.

I know that iPhoto slideshows can be VERY nice, and that a lot of time can be spent putting them together, but I would also suggest also giving everyone a copy of the source files (photos and videos).

This will allow people to watch the slideshow on their TVs or computers, but it would also allow them to share the individual pictures and movies. And, some people will probably prefer the source files because the source files will look MUCH better on HDTVs.

Hello I've been working on a slideshow using iphoto with tech support from an Apple consultant. I exported the slideshow to my desktop in order to burn it to my DVD-R disc. It took a really long time to export then save the files but it did finish. The Burn app was already downloaded on my Mac and so I went ahead to Burn this video slideshow to the disc however after dragging the file over from my desktop it says the file is incompatible and asks if I want it converted to mpg. I'm not sure what to do and how to proceed. This is for a special occasion that will be used as a presentation on a 7 foot screen using a DVD player. I don't want to mess anything up after so much time put into this project. I am unable to reach my consultant today and figured I'd reach out to this community and see if I could get some guidance on what to do next and if converting this file to an mpg is the right thing to do. If anyone can help please let me know. Thanks!

What is "it"? Which app are you using to create the video DVD? I'm not familiar the the Burn app. Where did you get it? It that's it's full name?

It it's a video DVD authoring applicaiton and asked you if you want to convert the file to the correct format go ahead and let it do so.

Those can be added to the DVD via the iDVD/Slideshow preference pane

and adding video files manually

via the Advanced ➙ Edit DVD-ROM Contents menu option.

I cannot get the file to save in quicktime. I tried that too. I have Iphoto 11. I have a new IMac. I want to burn a DVD for play on a tv.

No. DVD as a format is standard definition.

No. iDVD converts all media to 640 x 480 pixels as it's standard definition. Video DVDs are standard definition by defination. That's why they came out with Blue Ray.
