I am formating a manuscript for publication. It has gone back and forth between AppleWorks, MS Word, iWork, and OpenOffice for several years.
Now I have a black line approximately 1/8" to the left of every formatted paragraph. I cannot find the setting to eliminate that line. Searching the manual and database does not appear to answer this problem.

Your manuscript has been through the mill!
I suggest that you clean it up by converting it to plain text.
In Pages, Menu > Edit > Select All
and then Copy.
Open a text editor, such as TextEdit, and Paste.
You will lose the formatting - and perhaps those black lines?
You may also lose graphics.
Select All and Copy in your text editor, then Paste into a new, blank Pages document.
Any good? Have the black lines gone?
Now reapply the formatting!

That sounds like the way Change Tracking (from the Edit menu) marks changed paragraphs.
Try selecting Turn Off Tracking in the Edit menu.
