It will if you turn on wifi after turning on Airplane mode. Otherwise, it won't as it needs a connection to the internet to work.

That's good to know. I thought though the purpose of the airplane mode was to turn off the wifi so as to not interfere with the aircraft electronics.
I have always noted that when you switched on the airplane mode wifi turned off. I never thought to try and turn wifi back on so tried it and it works.
Now I'm confused as to just what airplane mode achieves
It turns off all communications not allowed on an Airplane, i.e. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. However these can be turned back on individually and manually.
On an iPod it turns off both wifi and Bluetooth. If you're on a plane, you're supposed to only turn wifi back on in the plane permits it. Some do as some now offer on board wifi Internet service for a fee.
