The iPod offered IOS 6.1.2.  I said to install it.  It said "Verifying Update", followed by "...failed....because you are no longer connected to the internet".  Well, my PC is certainly connected to the internet and the iPod is connected to the PC via USB.

On loading iTunes I found that I could update the iPod to IOS 6.3.  OK.  But it warned me that some items purchased on my iPod were not in my music library and I should back them up first.  It doesn't say which items and I can't find any. Under "Devices" in iTunes there is "Touch" with the single sub-heading "Music".  Clicking on this heading brings up a totally empty Music list, which is correct (I only use my iPod Touch as a PDA - calendar, data lists and contacts).

Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer by:

iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer

In iTunes 11 use Control+B to show the Menu bar then go to iTunes>File>Devices>Transfer Purchases

You can also try update directly on the iPod again. I got the same error message a few times with the last update. I just tried again and it went through either the next time or on the the third attempt. It appears that the Apple servers are just busy since after the update file is downloaded, the iPod has to again contact the Apple servers to verify the download and that second connection was not made.
