HELP! I zapped my pram, and am now snagged in restart. Apple logo appears, twirling icon, and can't move beyond grey screen. Panicking. A healthy machine until a few days ago when it got very sluggish. Am on deadline. Any help GREATLY appreciated. iMac 2011, intel processor.

Try a safe mode boot...restart and hold the shift key...may take longer to restart, you should get a progress bar, but this reboots the machine with the applications kernel extensions turned off. Should clear any issues.
Try to restart in Safe Mode, if that works then retry. To restart in Safe Mode, when you hear the startup tone hold down the Shift Key until a progress bar appears. Let the machine fully boot and then restart normally. A Safe Mode restart will clear some caches, it's possible one or more is corrupt.
I'm attempting a Safe restart. I get the bar, then computer keeps spinning. Won't reboot. Any other ideas? I don't have my OS discs. Purchased online. ???
What do you mean purchased on-line? Do you mean you have Lion of Mountain Lion installed? If so you can start on the Recovery Hard Drive partition by restarting holding both the Command and R keys, but that isn't going to clear this problem except for the ability to reinstall Mac OS X.
What version of OS X is installed on the computer and have you tried Paul's suggestion of Resetting the SMC? Also doing PRAM and SMC Resets it's a good idea to do them 2x at a minimum. Give those a try first.

Thank you. I've followed those instrux. Still stalled at grey screen. Any other thoughts?
What version of OS X do you have installed? If it's 10.7 Lion or 10.8 Mountain Lion did you try Ralph Landry1's suggestion of booting into the Recovery HD (restart holding command+r - select Disk Utility, select your Macintosh HD and click on repair disk. If anything gets fixed click repair disk again until you get a clean pass. Restart as normal from the Apple menu).
If you're running an earlier OS you'll ideally need the disk that came with the Mac.
