Battery life is horrible after iOS 6.1.3 update

I have noticed that since the update, my iPad is draining battery at a crazy rate! I left for work today with it fully charged and have not used it all day. (screen off and in standby mode) and I am down to 80%. That has never happened in the nearly 2 years that I have owned this machine. Does anyone have any info about if the latest update affected battery life at all?

Using the battery level meter in this manner is comparable to using your car's fuel gauge to calculate miles per gallon. The only thing that matters is the total amount of operating time from full charge to auto-shutdown.

Use the wall-mount charger that came with the iPad and charge overnight. Admittedly the labeling is hard to read but, if you use a magnifier and squint your eyes, you'll see "Output 5.1V, 2.1A." The symbol between volts and amps is the symbol for DC. Do NOT use an iPhone charger. Do NOT use an iPod charger. Do NOT use a computer's USB port. Then, operate it normally until auto shut-down (ignore any low level alerts that may appear). An irony is that doing that test to determine the total operating time is also the exact procedure necessary to calibrate the battery level meter.

I'm not claiming that you do not have a problem. I am stating, however, that we don't yet know whether or not a battery problem exists.

According to Apple:

Use Your iPad Regularly

For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

Elsewhere, Apple elaborates and explains that two half-discharges (or four quarter-discharges, etc.) equals one full discharge.

I tried this initially and it seemed to work for a day or so. The problem started again and this reset did not help at all. At this point, I think it may be a hardware issue. The only thing that gives me pause is that it is not a consistent occurrence. I have not added any new apps since updating, so it's either the iOS update or the hardware.

How much total operating time do you get from full charge to automatic shutdown?

I'm having the same (or very similar) issue since the update. My iPad4 (purchased in Feb of this year) was at 16% when I went to bed and plugged it in to the wall charger that came with it. When I woke up about 7 hours later it was at 45%. I've tried the resets on it and will see how it does today, but this seems similar to the problem we had a few months ago where the battery was draining fast.

Hi!

I have the same problem here. I have an iPad 4, my sister has an iPad 3 and In both cases, after upgrading to iOS 6.1.3, we notice an excessive consumption of battery. We soon noticed that because the problem is too obvious and crude. We'd never had any problem with the battery before. Please Apple, we are awaiting the iOS 6.1.4 to fix this.

Regards from Portugal.

Something may have gone amiss in the upgrade to iOS 6.1.3 on your iPad.

To correct this follow these steps:

  1. Backup your iPad using iTunes or iCloud.
  2. Use iTunes to completely restore your iPad as new.
  3. Setup iPad and monitor battery usage to see if it is normal. If not, you may have a hardware problem - if so, contact Apple support.
  4. Restore your iPad from your backup above.
  5. Check battery usage to confirm that remains normal.

Here, I'll save you the effort of reading this thread,😉

Reset the device closing all apps first for the best results. From the Home screen double tap the Home button to view the multitasking bar at the bottom. Tap and hold an app at the bottom till the icons wiggle with the minus button visible. Tap the button to close all apps then tap the Home button to get back to the Home page. Press and hold the Sleep button till you see the Slide to power off message and power it off. Once powered down completely press and hold the sleep button till the Apple icon appears.

If you spend much time in these forums you'll see the same certain issues such as this one come up after each iOS update which are almost always fixed with a Reset. If a Reset doesn't fix your issue you'll have to Restore. I doubt if this issue is in the update itself but may be cause by the update. A Reset is pretty much the same as restarting your computer when it is acting up.

I have exactly the same issue with IOS 6.1.3 upgrade on an IPAD 4. 1% battery drainage every 5 mins and the bottom left corner of IPAD is getting really hot. I have all suggestions of turning off iCLOUD settings and then reset IPAD but the battery drain is still there.

Obvioulsy, there is a firmware bug in 6.1.3 cuaisng some process to run in the background. I am also annoyed that there is no way to downgrade firmware. I am kicking myself for upgrading so soon. Can't believe APPLE did not do enough regression testing. Please release a fix soon or my IPAD is just an expensive paper weight.
