how do I fix Mac display after connecting to a projector

I connected my Mac to a projector which, as always, changes the display while connected.But I've shut down and restarted and can't get it back to normal. The font and images are all 'fat'- ie it's kind of spread out, distorted. I've tried looking in system preferences but can't see anything there. Not sure how to fix this
