Quicktime Player 7 - No sound

Hi, I just changed computers from a MacBook to a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.8.2) and I have some problems with Quicktime 7 Pro. When I try to watch videos (avi) that were working perfectly fine on my old computer, there's absolutely no sound. I know there are other ways to watch the videos like with VLC but I use Quicktime 7 to do a lot of cuts so I really need it. Any ideas?

Thank you for your answers, I did both and it's still not working 😢 When a video has no sound Quicktime player give me this link http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=OSX&ctype=73646563&c subtype=6d732000 and tells me that there's a composent missing but I don't know which one, I have Dvix and that's it I think.

If a file opens in a video playing app, check the file's information window to see what audio and/or video codecs are used in your media file. This window may have different names in different apps. For instance, the QT 7 and X apps call it the "Inspector" window. In this case, the "Format:" information lines will indicate which audio and video codecs were used to create the file. Your system must be configured with the same codec components in order to decode and play the file properly. This is why the first step is solving such playback issues is to check and see which specific audio and/or video component is causing a problem.

Ok, I looked it up and the video has a divx 5.0 format that I don't think it had on my old computer because there wasn't the little divx sign on the side, and the audio codec is AC3 stereo.

Answer provided above by Malcom was directed at a lack of AC3 support. The next question would be how you are trying to play the AC3 audio. Is your system configured for passthrough to an external AC3 decoder, via core audio to discrete audio channels, etc? If for passthrough and following Malcom's instructions above did you also check to make sure the Perian audio output was set the multichannel pop-up and make sure the AC3 track is designated as "active"? You may also need to make sure system audio setup is reconfigured from 44.1 KHZ to 48.0 KHZ to avoid audio drift during playback.

I personally find it easier to use a different approach—conversion to TV compatible files which contain both AAC and AC3 audio tracks and are then compatible with QT X, QT 7 and iTunes apps, as well as, all Apple mobile devices (iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad) along with the TV device.

You may have some files in your account's Library that are being used instead of the correct ones in he top level Library. Go to your account Library using Finder's Go menu while pressing the Option key. If there is a QuickTime (or Qt) folder, make sure it's empty. In the Audio folder, go to the Plug-Ins folder. In there, be sure the Components folder is empty.

Now go the correct Library folder at the top level of your hard drive. Go to the QuickTime folder.

<http://perian.org>

"Please consider removing obsolete QuickTime Components: FFusion, Xvid Delegate, 3ivX, DivX, DivX Decoder, XviD, msmpeg4v1, msmpeg4v2, AviImporter, EX_M4S2, Casio AVI Importer, AC3 Codec, and MatroskaQT."

After installing Perian, my QuickTime folder contains the following files:

AC3MovieImport.component

AppleIntermediateCodec.component

AppleMPEG2Codec.component

EyeTV MPEG Support.component

Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component

Flip4Mac WMV Export.component

Flip4Mac WMV Import.component

Perian.component

In the Audio folder, go to the Plug-Ins folder, then the Components folder. In that folder I have the following files:

A52Codec.component

Flip4Mac WMA Import.component

The A52Codec.component file should be 194 KB. If it is much larger, it is the original Perian version, and must be repleced with the Mountain Lion version as mentioned in a previous post.

Ok this is getting a bit complicated for me 😕 I couldn't find my account's library file, I just have the one in the hard drive. I had already downloaded Perian but in quicktime folder there was some dvix components that I deleted and then they are some component you mentionned that are missing, in it I have :

AppleIntermediateCodec.component

AppleMPEG2Codec.component

Flip4Mac WMV Advanced.component

Flip4Mac WMV Export.component

Filp4Mac WMV Import.component

I only have those five and in the audio file I have none. I really don't get it :/

To get to your account's Library folder, hold the Option key while using Finder's Go menu.

Your list of files shows no trace of Perian. Maybe it got installed in your account's Library. If so, remove Perian

<http://perian.org>

"How do I remove Perian?

Open the System Preferences. Select the Perian pane and 'Remove.' Now 'Show All' preference panes, control-click the Perian pane and 'Remove "Perian" Preference Pane."

Reinstall Perian (be sure it is installed for all usewrs, not just your account) then replace the audio codec with the Mountain Lion version.
