When screensaver is runnng and I close the lid, I get a grey screen followed by a message tellng me that "your computer resarted becuase of a problem, press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up" .

Kernal Panics usually occur because of third party software or RAM problems.
Is that screen saver third party?
No - same result with each apple screensaver
Did you try turning off the screen saver? Same result??
with screensaver off - no crash, works as expected
Could be corrupt plist, Try moving to the desktop the com.apple.screensaver.plist
Finder>Go>Go to Folder copy and paste
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plistrestart the plist will rebuild itself. If all is well delete the plist on the desktop.
If no change you can always put it back.

You try a SafeBoot
SafeBoot http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
this will delete cache file etc and allow you to test screen saver in this new environment with no third party extentions or apps coming into play.
You can also try opening a new user account, to see if the problem is global or limited to your user (admin) account.

eliminate your log-in items and other open apps in your account. There is a conflict.
>SysPref>User & Groups>Log-in items
new additions, suspected interference, put back one at a time if need be and test.
just testd setting up a new account - no crash on screensaver + lid close. Will wok on conflict - may take some time - thanks for your help
