I was thinking about picking up a new 2.0GHz MacBook, anyone know how well these things work with Garageband? Any latency recording real instruments? Or Software Instruments?
iMac 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5, 768MB Ram,
Mac OS X (10.4.6)
I record to a G5, but in a pinch, I have used my powerbook 1.5 without too much latency. Recording live instrmnts is seamless. Midi-controlled software instrmnts have a bit of latency. However... there are some options which allow you to control the latency if you record 1 track at a time.
I have the MacBook Pro 2.0 GHz, and so far I didn't have to solo a single track ... 🙂 It's really lightening fast. As for latency: It's fine for guitar effects. With vocal recordings, I prefer direct monitoring over listening to the effects, because even minimal latency is disturbing for my ears.
The only thing that bugs me is 3rd party software. Almost none of my equipment and plugins is really working perfectly:
- A lot of developers of AU plugins haven't updated them for Intel processors.
- What I'm really missing is SoundFontSynth - so I can't play soundfont banks.
- My Presonus Inspire is working, but the control panel software isn't, so I can't adjust levels etc.
- The iControl controller doesn't work perfectly, e.g. the volume knobs don't react.
- Like with the Inspire, the Samson USB mic is working, but the control software isn't.
So if you get an Intel, even 4 months after the introduction you still need some patience.
Maybe I should start a new thread, because here is a new question:
I'm using Garageband 3 on my new MacBook 2GHz 512MB (upgraded from 12" Powerbook with GB2) and I just came back from a little home recording session in Sweden.
Recording through a M-Audio MobilePre (yes, Intel Drivers) and mixing I had problems with playback distortion (solved by lowering GB output level) and playback cracks and skips. GB3 puts cracks and skipps into playback of just 4 tracks, 3 of them secured (little green lock). My Powerbook did fine on a lot of more! This urely can't be the end of capacity?! I plan on upgrading RAM, but it should be working fine with 512MB though!
