I have already asked for help with regard to OS X 10.6.8 Combo Update download - error message every time stating 'the following disk images couldn't be opened - reason - illegal seek'

PLUS

Can't download Snow Leopard system updates - repeated error

NOW

My Time Machine backup - which has worked perfectly for many months has suddenly decided 'the back-up disk image /volumes......sparsebundles' could not be accessed!!

Are all these issues related?

Any advice most welcome.

Julie

Julie, your prfile states that you're running 10.7 Lion. Why are you trying to download and install updates for 10.6 Snow Leopard? Or did i miss something?

    Hi Mike

Sorry, I have 10.6.8 and I forgot to change this which is from an early query and I made a mistake!

    I will change it now.

    Any advice?

Were you at one time running 10.7?

Let me get my bearings....you can't download and install system updates from Software Update? So you're trying the standalone combo updater and getting errors correct? Which updates to 10.6 are you attempting? Sorry for all the questions.

No, never have run 10.7 - it was my mistake on the drop down menu!

Software update issues - security update, itunes, java update 14 - all these are not happening for me - it starts the download process and then reverts to an error message.

A previous response suggested I try Combo Update to iron out some glitches - but this I can't download either as once downloaded it tells me ' the following disk images couldn't be opened' reason - illegal seek.

In addition today, my Time Machine has been unable to do its hourly back-up stating 'Volumes/....sparse.bundle' could not be accessed.

I am curious to know if all these issues are related and if something sinister has occurred.

    Everything else is working perfectly!

First your Time Machine problem, I don't know if your problems are related. Take a lookmat Pondini's site, best TM reference that I know of http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html Pay special attention to the Troubleshooting page, section three C17, it discusses "sparse bundle cannot be accessed"

How much total and free space is on your internal hard drive?

Have you tried a safe boot? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1564
