iPad2 Passcode help

I have never set up a passcode to unlock my iPad. Suddenly it is asking for a passcode to unlock the screen. I used it before bed and no one has had access to it since then. Now it asks for a code that I don't have. How can I fix this problem?

If you have tried a reboot, hold both the power and home buttons until the apple logo appears and it restarts, ignoring the red slider if it appears, does not help clear that message, then somehow it has had a passcode installed. Only way to clear that is to follow the steps in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1212 which may need to be done more than once.
