I have a mac laptop(OSX 10.6.8) is there any way of streaming my laptop content onto my TV using apple TV?
For example if I wanted to watch a TV show on a website but project it onto my TV?

You have different options to stream the computer onto your Apple TV. First of all, you have AirPlay Mirroring, available in OS X Mountain Lion and compatible with some Macs > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5404 To use it, you must be using a compatible Mac and you have to upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.
If your Mac isn't supported or you don't want to upgrade, you can use a third-party app like AirParrot > http://www.airparrot.com It works exactly the same way as AirPlay Mirroring, so you shouldn't have any problem
