Transfering MiniDV to PowerBook G4: Firewire Cable

you definitely need a 4- to 6-pin cable: 4-pin for the camera and 6-pin for the computer. as for the brand, you can choose from an unbelievable variety; I personally stick with the Sony cable, but that's a choice as good as any ... many ... lol

The transfer from your camera to the computer is a digital transfer - not analog. So even with a bad cable, there is no 'degradation' of image. If the cable is bad, the transfer simply doesn't work.

For short runs, as long as there is a solid fit in the camera and computer receptacles, most cables from reputable manufacturers will be fine. If you are running 16' or even 32' cables - then the manufacturer is pretty important.

Having said all this, Granite Digital sells a line of cables that are well made, well shielded and very reliable. I know there are others.

I think Granite's cables are the best from the standpoint that they are the most rugged I've ever seen... and the sheilding on them does allow for longer cable runs which points to a higher quality too.
