stolen?

A friend of mine recently had her 30G iPod video stolen, and I wondered if there was a way to track the serial number, or is this just a rumor???

This is one of those things that we all wish would happen, but it doesn't. I'm guessing because of the millions of false alarms and privacy invasions (a friend borrowing one or something) there would be if iTunes tracked them.
Its funny because Apple does indeed track serial numbers on thier software for their well being.

So, no.

But for you're own sake, keep that number!! Most of the time, a crook will try and pawn it for a quick 100 bucks and your SN is all the proof you need to get it back. So start alerting you're local pawnshops about your hot item.

Also, in the "about" section of the iPod menu, it will display the serial and the name you assigned to the device. (such as "Justin's iPod") Hopefully the crook isn't technically savy enought to remove this (they never are so don't worry) and this is VERY powerful evidence of the fact that it's yours.

Sorry,

Actually, no this is not true.
The pawn shop will ask to see a police report and then they will notify the police they have something which is reported stolen. They will NOT simply give you the product. They’d simply be out $100 because you have a serial number? What if you got ticked off at your ex and they tried to sell their own iPod which you had the serial number for?

So start alerting you're local pawnshops about your hot item.
Better yet, file a police report and include the serial number before you notify any pawn shops.
