Roaming Network / IP Issue

I have spent a loooong time painfully troubleshooting issues with the set up of a roaming network using a Time Capsule and Airport Extreme.

Everything is now working fine.....except....

There are many devices in the house connecting to the wireless and often one or two of the devices show as being connected to the wifi but cannot actual access the Internet.. I contacted my ISP as part of my enquiries into this and they advised that their service only allows a max of 5 IP addresses to be allocated per household and that I need to change the settings on my router to share IP addresses within the network instead of the devices retrieving IP addresses from the ISP.

Obviously the technician couldn't advise how to do this using apple products so that my next question...

How do I alter airport utility settings to fix this issue?

Running OSX10.8.3 and airport utility 6.2.

Thanks

Time Capsule 802.11n (4th Gen), OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3)

It would be much better if you could convince your ISP to allocate more IP addresses to your network. There is likely a setting on your ISP provided modem/router that will do this.

Otherwise, you will have to try to run one of your Apple routers with a setting that "breaks the rules" as far as basic networking is concerned.

As such, there are no guarantees that this will work.

Do you want to try to do this?

If yes, we are going to need to ask more questions to understand how you have your network set up at the present time. You will need to be very patient with this, as some experimentation will likely be required.

Thanks for your help in advance Bob!

The ISP have said this is non negotiable and that they usually advise customers to just change the setting on their router as a workaround.

So I would certainly be happy to look at experimenting with alternatives.

I am in an apartment block with ethernet wall jacks to connect directly to the internet so dont use a modem for connection (not sure exactly what terminology to use to describe that so hopefully thats clear).

TC is connected to the ethernet wall jack and is being treated as the the 'primary' router. It is also connected to a mac. AE is also connected to a wall jack in another room but I THINK i have created a roaming network by first setting up the AE next to the TC before moving it through to the other room. Screenshot of the graphic below (taken using mac in different room from AE). I realise there appears to be an issue with the AE in this but the green light is on on the AE and when i view airport utility on iphone while standing in the same room as AE all seems fine.

Hope ths makes sense

Thanks. It is not acting as a router at the present time.....it is acting as a "bridge".

We're not to the AirPort Extreme yet, but if you want to configure it as a roaming device....connected by Ethernet....you will need to plan to run an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule to the WAN port on the AirPort Extreme. You will not be able to use the Ethernet port in the other room if your ISP service is delivered to that Ethernet port.

If the distance is not too great or there are not a lot of obstructions in the signal path, it might be possible to configure the AirPort Extreme to extend the signal of the Time Capsule using wireless only.

If that is not possible, then you might be able to send an Ethernet signal from the Time Capsule to the AirPort Extreme using a pair of Ethernet powerline adapters.

You really have two issues here.....one is whether or not the Time Capsule can be configured (with errors) to be the main router. Assuming that this works....as I said there are no guarantees.....then the AirPort Extreme connection will need to be thought out.

If you want to proceed with the Time Capsule, then you should set the AirPort Extreme aside and power it off until you know whether the Time Capsule will work correctly when it is set to share IP addresses.

Do you want to proceed with only the Time Capsule at this time?

Sorry for the radio silence on this Bob. My head is a bit confused by it all but you have confirmed the slight suspicion that i hadnt actually set it up correctly in the first place 😕

But yes, I would really like to get to the root of this and try to get the best possible set up so lets look at just the TC for the moment.

FYI - I have tried to wirelessly extend the network using the AE and it did work but signal wasnt great in some parts of the apartment so had assumed that trying the roaming option would improve things....of course will forget about that for the meantime until figuring out the IP issue with the TC.

Im all ears...

OK, thanks for the info. Let's tackle the TC first and see if that will work. In case we need to start over and re-configure the TC or the AirPort Exreme, I assume that you know, or have written down the name of the wireless network, passwords, etc.

Use your Mac that shows that the TC is connected to the Internet. I assume that it still displays this way. If not, power off the TC and wait a minute, then power it back up to make sure that the Mac can "see" the TC and that the TC is connected to the Internet.

We are going to try a "shortcut" first to try to avoid completely resetting the TC back to factory default settings and then setting it up all over again.

Open AirPort Utility on the Mac

Click on the TC icon, then click Edit in the next small box that appears

Click on the Network tab at the top of the window

Change the setting for Network Mode to read DHCP and NAT

Click Update at the lower right of the window

Wait a minute for the TC to restart. The amber light will be flashing slowly at this point

When you look at or click on the TC in AirPort Utility, there will be one or more amber dots with an "error" next to the dot. Post back with the "error" that you see.

The TC should supply IP addresses for up to 50 wireless devices and another 150 wired devices in that setting. I assumed that the TC was set for Bridge Mode.

Check the following setting in AirPort Utility:

Click the Network Tab again and then click Network Options at the bottom of the window.

Check the setting for iPv4 DHCP Range. It should read 10.0.1.2 to 200.

If that is the setting, the TC is providing IP addresses for almost 200 devices. You do not have an IP issue here as far as the number of device.

Instead, your Internet Service Provider has almost certainly placed a strict limit on the bandwidth of your Internet connection.

What is happening is that the extra devices you are trying to connect are requiring more bandwidth than the service allows for your connection. Ask them if they can provide you with more bandwidth.

Otherwise, I am afraid that you have done all that you can do from your side of the Internet connection.

Hmmmmm...yes it is set to "10.0.1.2 to 200"

I am based in the UAE where we have a monopoly on telecommunications and its no secret that the only two ISPs we have can place unrealistic restrictions on things like these.

So back to the drawing board it is. I will try and pick up my enquiries with them again.

Thanks so much for your time and effort. You have the patience of a saint ➕🙂
