Disable Programs During Startup

Can someone please help me understand how I can keep programs like Spotify from starting when I power my MacBook Pro on? I'm sure it's easy but I looked around and couldn't find it and it's my first week using OS X (10.8.3).

Thanks so much!

There are several ways how to stop programs from opening at Mac startup:

1) Go to the System Preferences → Users & Groups → switch to Login Items tab and remove the appropriate login item from there.

2) Make a right click on the app's icon in the dock panel and unlink Open at Login.

3) Remove the app's login item via App Cleaner.

First of all, OS X Lion and Mountain Lion have got a feature that makes OS X to start automatically all the applications you have opened when you turned off or restarted the Mac in the next startup. To make sure that Spotify doesn't open automatically, go to  > Restart, and restart your Mac, but first make sure that you unmark "Reopen windows when logging back in"
