I have been trying to update software, and install 10.6.8. combo Update and now Mail has gone - this is beyond a joke!

What resolution did not work? Your Mail version should be 4.6 (1085). My mail attained that version after the 10.6.8 Combo update ... which you seem to have a problem with ... but I have to add that I did this a couple of years ago and the update may have changed since.
Just out of interest, in those days there was more than one update. I half remember a 'server' version which when download against the normal 10.6.8 OS played havoc with some machines. I only mention it in case you had accidentally used that one.
Hope it gets sorted soon. Being without mail is a real nuisance.
