Could I just wipe out all my devices and start fresh?

I recently discovered I had too many devices, more than 10. Doesn't make sense with a family of four to limit to 10 anyway. Could I wipe all my devices. Delete them and then add. Would doing so make it so I have to backup each device and load them again? Please advise. Also, why doesn't apple let you have more devices to an ID if you have a family under one id. Managing two accounts for a family would be difficult.

iPhone 5, iOS 6.1.3, itunes

You have to use separated Apple ID for every person of your family if you don't want to merge all info like Contacts, Calendar etc. or receiving each others iMessages.

Setup each device with its own Apple ID for iCloud, iMessage and FaceTime. Use the old "main" account for "iTunes and App Stores" and "Home Sharing".
