ipod nano window display doesn't turn on unless connected to PC

My iPod nano display only shows while connected to a charger (wall or pc). The only way I can currently use it, is to turn it on while connected start playing a play list and then it runs until it runs out of battery or I reconnect it to a charger. After removing it from a charger the screen goes blank and I can not control sound, power, songs or anything else. It continues to play whatever songs were qued and will track Nike fitness workout but nothing can be controlled nor the screen display brought up again.

I have tried to reinstall the software without success. Has anyone run into this problem previously and has a suggested solution?

Thanks!
