I have read every conversation and nothing works. I tried setting this up in Microsoft Exchange, I've also added it as a CardDAV Account. Has anyone come up with a solution?

I've tried this twice before and again now, and my contacts still did not sync. I am expecting them to show up on my Contacts App on my ipad. All I get is the name of the group I just created but no individual contacts. Am I looking in the wrong spot?
It worked! Thank you! I tried this before and it did not sync. I started asking Siri for the individual contact information (I thought she was my work around), so I knew the contacts had to be somewhere. I followed the steps you gave me (deleting my other "contact" accounts) and this time everything showed up.

Unfortunately, as of 1/31/13 that no longer works unless you have a paid GMail account.
The CardDAV type account (2nd link above) should work just fine. Here is Apple's version of this same information:
