ipod is not showing in my computer or in itunes please help

Just got my first ipod. Followed all instructions for troubleshooting. Ipod icon does not appear in itunes as a device or in my computer, nothing is happening when I attach ipod to computer, very frustrating. again have followed all troubleshooting directions, any ideas?
