iMac to MacBook Air document transfer through migration assistant halted by itself with 2 hours 19 minutes left, about 4 hours to go... No sign that either machine is doing anything..

If both Macs are connected with a cable (Thunderbolt or FireWire), disconnect and connect it again, so the restore should continue.
If not, I'm afraid that the only solution is to restart the MacBook Air and start Migration Assistant again

That's the only way of turning off the computer. Hold the Power button until the computer turns off, and press it again to start the Mac
Am (at least was) connected thru wireless network..
That's the worst method to transfer data with Migration Assistant, because if your router restarts or it stops working (or it interrupts the connection between your Macs), it won't work
